Pileup management

A pileup is not a personality contest. It is traffic control on a spotted frequency. You are either the station everyone is calling (activator) or one of the stations calling (hunter). Those jobs do not mix. Mix them and you stall the run or you never get in the log.

You are the pileup (activator)

You own the frequency you spotted. Hunters come to you. Stay on or next to that frequency until you announce a move. Hopping 5 kHz because the noise floor twitched is how the pile evaporates — hunters loaded the spot, not your imagination. Opening sequence and spot cadence: CQ.

Run, do not search. Search-and-pounce is the hunter’s job (Hunt). While you are spotted, you call CQ, take callers, log, QRZ. You do not tune around looking for someone more interesting.

When the rate dies: last call a few times on the air, then QSY or QRT. Update the spot (QSY in Polo, or edit the listing) so the next frequency is not a rumor. Full closeout: Activate.

Pulling one station out of the mess

If the pile is a wall, stop sending “QRZ?” into the blender.

• Partial: “Station ending in Charlie” — then work that station. Everyone else stays quiet.
• By the numbers: “Stations with 3 in the call” (or a call area, or a region). Work that slice, then open it up again.
• QRP / YL / mobile windows are filters, not theater. Give them a real 30 seconds. QRP stations disappear first if you never ask.

One station at a time. If two calls overlap, pick a letter, work that person, then go back. Do not try to log both from the collision.

Exchanges stay short: RST, your reference if they still need it, thanks, next. The picnic-table novel belongs on a recap card, not on 14.242.

Rate vs accuracy: a 40-QSO file with the wrong MY_SIG_INFO is zero award QSOs. Glance at the park field between callers.

You are in the pileup (hunter)

Listen through at least one full QSO before you call. Learn their cadence. Then:

One callsign, once. NATO phonetics on the first pass (Kilo Bravo Three…). After they have you, plain call is enough. Three copies of your call mashed on top of two other stations is how nobody gets copied.

Do not tail. A tail is calling in the last syllable of the other hunter’s exchange, or calling the instant they say “thanks” before QRZ. Wait for the invitation. If they are mid-QSO with someone you cannot hear, that gap is skip — not your cue.

Partials that are not you: hands off. If they said “Charlie” and you are a Bravo, you are not helping by shouting “no, Bravo.” Wait for the next QRZ.

“Again?” means they have a fragment. Send the callsign once, slower, with phonetics. Do not send it three times stacked. If they still miss, wait a cycle.

When to stop calling

• They pulled a partial that is not you.
• You are in the log on this band/mode already (dupe — see below).
• You have called through several QRZ cycles, they are working S9 stations, and you are S2. Change band, wait for a lull, or hunt someone else.
• They asked for P2P only and you are in the shack. Stay quiet.
• They announced last call and QSY. Do not follow them 3 kHz uninvited and start calling.

P2P / S2S — do not bury the field station

Park-to-park and summit-to-summit contacts are harder than a hunter with a beam. If you hear the activator ask for field-to-field, non-portable hunters yield. If you are portable in another unit, call then — once — with your reference.

Listening for park-to-park or summit-to-summit, please call now.

Give a real window (30–60 seconds), work who you hear, log their reference on that QSO, then go back to the hunt pile. They hiked too.

• Polo: their park in the POTA / P2P field (2518 is enough; Polo prefixes). Export: SIG_INFO.
• AC Log: Tab to the Other field titled SIG_INFO. Do not put it in comments and hope.

If the P2P tags are a mess after the fact, ADIF Doctor is the unstick tool. Ordinary pileup logging does not need it.

QRP in a pile

Ten watts does not win a simultaneous shout with a hundred-watt hunter. It wins on timing and copy.

• Full phonetics, once, in a lull — after they work the loud stations, or when they ask for QRP.
• Do not key in the same millisecond as the S9 wall. Wait a beat. The activator’s ear opens when the wall stops.
• If they cannot copy you after a few honest tries, you are not entitled to the frequency. Change band, wait, or let it go.
• Activators: a short “QRP only” window is how those stations get in the log. Skip it and you will only work the amplifiers.

Dupes

Same hunter, same band, same mode, same UTC day: you already have them. Activator: a polite “in the log, thanks” is enough — do not re-work them to be nice unless you need a different mode for a slow day. Hunter: if you hear “in the log,” stop calling. AC Log dupe check should already be on; Polo will warn if you try to Send twice.

Different mode on the same band is a new QSO on POTA. Use that when the activator is struggling toward minimums, not to pad.

CW vs SSB

SSB piles are a wall of sound. You pull with partials, numbers, and phonetics. CW piles are a knot of pitches. Hunters should not zero-beat — use XIT so you arrive at a different tone. Activators listen across the filter, not only on their own sidetone.

Split (UP 1) is rare on a casual park run and common when the pile is a DXpedition. If you use it, say so and keep working the offset you announced.

Never tune a tuner, sweeper, or FT8 tone on the run frequency. Match elsewhere, then return. Full CW rhythm: CW operating. FT8: split TX, Hold Tx Freq — still no repeaters, still your callsign. Do not let the laptop CQ on a frequency you have not listened to.

Etiquette (both sides)

• No tuning on the run freq — phone, CW, or a waterfall slot. That is not “just a carrier.”
• No “the frequency is in use” wars. The spotted activator is running. If you were there first and they QRL’d past you, a short “in use” during their QRL is enough; after they are spotted and working a pile, you moved on. Do not lecture a park pile about how you ragchew there on Tuesdays.
• Listen first, leave a gap after QRZ, ID. The long version is Ethics.

Habits / gotchas / checklist (pileup)

• Activator: stay on the spotted frequency. Run, do not hunt. Partials and numbers beat “QRZ?” into a wall.
• Hunter: one call, once. No tail. Hands off a partial that is not you.
• P2P window is real (30–60 s). Non-portable hunters yield. Log SIG_INFO on that row.
• QRP window if you want those stations in the log. Timing beats power.
• Dupe: “in the log, thanks.” Different mode = new POTA QSO; same mode same band same UTC day is not.
• No tuner, sweeper, or FT8 tone on the run frequency.
• Rate vs accuracy: wrong MY_SIG_INFO zeros the upload.
