Permanent shack grounding and station layout

Most of this guide is field-first. Many hunters operate from a fixed shack between activations — and activators test gear at home before Saturday. A permanent station needs deliberate grounding and bonding, separate from “throw a radial on the grass.”

Three different “grounds”

Hams conflate these; treating them as one wire causes RFI and safety problems:

A single-point ground panel (SPGP) in the shack ties coax shields, rotator control lines, and equipment bonds together at one bus — then connects to outdoor ground rods through a controlled path.

Shack layout principles

  1. Entry panel: all coax and control lines enter at one wall plate. Surge protectors mount on the panel, grounded to the bus — not floating behind the desk.
  2. Short bonds: wide straps or heavy wire between radio, amplifier, tuner, and switch. Long skinny ground wires act like inductors at RF.
  3. Keep RF out of the house: common-mode chokes on feedlines at the entry (and at the antenna when needed). ARRL second edition expands choke placement for portable stations too.
  4. Separate “dirty” and “clean”: power wiring, RF cables, and audio USB run parallel only when unavoidable — cross at right angles when they must meet.

Practical single-point layout

Put a single-point ground plate outside where coax enters the building. Bond every coax shield there, and bond that plate to the house ground so AC safety and RF reference share one intentional path — not competing rods. Run a good ground braid from that outdoor plate back to an in-shack grounding bar; radios, tuner, amp, and switch bond to the bar with short straps, not skinny daisy-chain wires.

On the AC side, use a quality surge protector rated for your power-supply amperage, or better, put the shack on dedicated circuit(s) so the station is not sharing a noisy lighting run with LED drivers and phone chargers. Common-mode chokes still belong on feedlines at the entry (and at the antenna when needed) — the ground plate handles surge and bonding; chokes handle RF on the braid.

Surge and lightning realism

Perfect protection against a direct strike is expensive. Many hams aim for:

OERadio notes: measure ground resistance if you can (target often cited under 10 Ω for serious lightning systems). “One rod and hope” is common; know what you are buying.

Operating from a permanent station as a POTA hunter

Shack hunting is valid POTA participation — you are not activating, but your QSOs count when the activator logs you.

UTC, clocks, and always-on WSJT

A shack hunter who leaves WSJT-X running still needs the PC clock inside one second of UTC. NTP at home is the easy path; confirm it after a Windows sleep. Paper is still useful: a desk pad for the rare phone hunt when the logger is frozen. Photograph it if you will type later.

RFI that only shows up at 100 W

USB hubs, wall warts, LED desk lamps, and a cheap switch-mode 13.8 V supply will raise the noise floor until you think 20 m is dead. Kill loads one at a time. Ferrite the USB to the 7300. Common-mode choke on the feed at the entry panel — the SPGP handles surge; the choke handles braid RF. If the microphone is hot, the antenna is using the house wiring as a radial. Fix the choke/counterpoise, do not buy another radio.
