SDR / Flex / Apache

Who this page is for

Operators who already own a FlexRadio or Apache Labs (ANAN) and want to know whether it belongs in a park — and hunters who use an RTL-SDR to practice. This is not a first-radio shopping page. Ethernet SDRs are POTA tailgate / shelter stations, not SOTA backpack radios.

First radio to buy in this family

Do not buy a Flex or ANAN as a first POTA radio. Buy an IC-705 or G90 (or the Yaesu/Elecraft QRP you will actually carry).

If you already own a 6400/6600, the first “field” accessory to buy is a fused Powerpole distribution and a travel router that has been tested at home, not a second Maestro.

RTL-SDR: buy one for receive practice (FT8 decode, sat downlink, band scanning). It will not activate a park.

RTL-SDR and other receive dongles

Useful for:

Not useful for: transmitting, POTA hunter credit (you still have to be in the log of an activator), or replacing a real HF radio.

Cabling to Digirig / USB codec / WSJT-X

Ethernet SDRs usually are the codec: SmartSDR / Thetis virtual audio into WSJT-X on the same PC. You do not add a Digirig unless you are bridging a non-Ethernet radio.

StackTypical digital path
Flex + Windows/Mac SmartSDRVirtual audio + CAT/TCP as Flex documents for your SmartSDR version
ANAN + ThetisThetis VAC + CAT
RTL-SDRHDSDR / SDR# / similar receive into a decoder — no TX

Pick one master logger. The laptop running SmartSDR/Thetis is the N3FJP machine. Do not also log on a phone without a plan for which ADIF is canonical. Merge extras in ADIF Doctor.

Still missing a model?

FLEX-8000 series, Maestro-only field notes, Power Genius current-budget, and specific Thetis VAC recipes are thin on purpose. Comment on this page with the model and whether it is shack, shelter, or (ambitious) vehicle.
