Boating and maritime portable ham
Operating from a boat combines POTA-style portability with marine RF challenges: salt, motion, limited ground plane, and shared space with non-ham crew. Treat this page as engineering overview — verify licence class, flag state rules, and marine radio regulations before transmitting offshore.

Ham vs marine SSB
Amateur HF and marine MF/HF (SSB) serve different legal roles. Many cruisers carry both an amateur transceiver and an Icom M-802-class marine radio. This guide covers amateur operation only. Do not use marine allocated channels for ham QSOs or vice versa.
The grounding problem
Saltwater is an excellent counterpoise — when your antenna system is designed to use it. Fiberglass hulls are not.
Patterns from cruising installs (S/V Johanna Rose write-up):
- Autotuner at the antenna base (SGC, Icom AH-4/AH-4 class) with minimal coax length to the water-adjacent ground point
- Wide copper strap or foil to keel bolts, engine bond, or dedicated ground plate — round wire alone is poor at RF
- DC block / RF coupling on through-hulls to avoid galvanic corrosion when bonding metal underwater
Icom AT-140/141 manuals insist the tuner ground terminal connect to the vessel’s ground system — not fuel tanks or unrelated pipes.
Freshwater and portable boat practice
Freshwater boats are especially tricky — you lose the saltwater counterpoise that saltwater cruisers take for granted. Bond to a grounding plate if the hull has one (or can accept one). While operating, hang radials on unused or clear railings as a temporary counterpoise, and pull them when you are done so they do not snag crew or dock lines. If the layout allows, a dipole in an L configuration (one leg along a rail or boom, the other hanging or guyed clear) often outperforms a whip fighting a fiberglass hull with no RF ground.
Autotuners at the antenna base (SGC, Icom AH-4 class) still want the shortest practical path to that ground plate or radial system — not a long coax run back to the nav station “and hope.”

Portable “remove it when you change boats”
Cruisers who charter or swap hulls sometimes build a quick-disconnect box: radio, tuner, and ground strap on a bracket in the nav station; five connectors and you carry the kit to the next vessel. Good for amateur coastal hops; still requires per-boat ground validation.
POTA from a boat (where legal)
A park unit that includes navigable water may allow activation from anchor or mooring inside the boundary if you meet POTA’s “operator and equipment in the park” rule. Confirm:
- Mooring permission
- Park reference actually includes your coordinates
- Safety — anchoring ops and traffic
SOTA from a boat is usually nonsense unless you are on a summit lake AZ — different problem.
WWFF marine reserves may have stricter environmental rules than POTA state parks.
Salt, corrosion, and maintenance
- Stainless hardware still corrodes at RF joints — inspect monthly
- Sealed coax connectors; dielectric grease on exposed threads
- Bag the radio in spray conditions; condensation kills CAT ports
Power
House bank 12 V with appropriate breaker sizing (25 A class common for 100 W HF mobile). Engine alternator charging while at anchor — mind noise on RX.
RF safety, wet decks, and not mixing radios
Salt water, a wet deck, and 100 W HF is how people get RF burns and how autopilots go insane. The tuner ground is RF, not a DC bonding afterthought.
- Keep the autotuner at the antenna, copper strap (not round wire) to the ground plate / keel bolt / seawater coupling. Long skinny wire to the nav station is an inductor. Gordon West–class advice still holds: keep that RF-ground run short.
- DC block (capacitors across a gap in the strap) so the HF ground does not become another galvanic path in a marina. Sacrificial anodes still matter if you bond underwater metal.
- Do not grab a wet backstay insulator while transmitting. Do not sit with your spine against a radiating stay. Same high-voltage warning as an EFHW unun — ethics.
- Marine VHF (channel 16, 156.8 MHz, DSC) is a safety radio with its own antenna and license/MMSI rules. Amateur HF is Part 97 (or your flag state’s amateur rules). Do not call CQ on marine SSB channels. Do not use a ham box as a substitute for the marine VHF you are required to monitor underway. Handheld marine VHF does not need an HF ground plate; the HF tuner does.
Person-overboard, anchoring, and traffic: the activation is optional. The boat is not. One operator on the radio; someone else watching the hook if you are in a channel.
Freshwater: you lost the saltwater mirror. Rail radials or an L-dipole, then pull them so they do not snag crew.
