First POTA activation (Technician VHF)
You passed. The HT is on the desk. The question is not “can I chase DX on 20 m?” — it is “can I make a real first park day on VHF?”
This is the short path for new Technicians: wait for the ULS grant, pick an accessible park, print a Field Sheet, work simplex on 2 m, get to the POTA floor of 10 QSOs in one UTC day, then close out in ADIF Doctor. It is independent. Not affiliated with Parks on the Air, ARRL, NCVEC, or any VEC. Program rules live on the official sites — confirm before you log an award.
Community signal, not a new rule: a first park day on 146.52 (or NAAF) with no repeater QSOs and a clean 10-QSO log teaches the sport faster than another mock exam.
1. After you pass — before you transmit
New licensee (no prior grant):
- Pay the $35 FCC application fee online to the FCC when the application appears — not to the VE team. Details and cites: After you pass — fee, CSCE, and when you may transmit.
- A CSCE is not on-air authority for a brand-new station. Wait until the license appears in ULS with a callsign before you transmit.
- Already licensed and upgrading: Part 97 upgrade privileges may apply with a valid CSCE — that path is on the same Overview callout. This page assumes a new Technician call.
Practice until the pool is boring: Ticket to Talk (Element 2, 409 Qs, Technician 2026–2030, local-first). The guide does not paste the NCVEC pool into prose; the game hosts the pool JSON for practice. We are not NCVEC and this is not the exam.
2. Pick an accessible park
- Close, simple access, no hero summit. Parking-lot or picnic-table parks beat bushwhacks for day one.
- Confirm the reference is on the designated list and Active on pota.app the morning you go. France (FR-): use the planning callout — POTA France — reference freshness. Do not trust a stale CSV.
- You and all equipment must be inside the park boundary (POTA rules · Activation location).
3. Field Sheet before you lose cell
Print a Field Sheet at the kitchen table:
- Park name + official reference + 6-character grid
- Sunrise / bailout / hospital
- Frequencies: 146.52 (national 2 m simplex calling) and optionally 146.58 (North America Adventure Frequency / NAAF)
- Paper log backup
Longer opening sequence: Activate. Cell dies mid-sitting: Dead cell / rover QRT. Paper companion in the lot: Parking-lot Field Sheet pack.
4. On air — simplex only for credit
POTA floor: at least 10 QSOs from the park in one UTC day (0000–2359Z), then submit an ADIF (POTA rules).
Land repeaters do not count for activator credit. You may use a repeater to ask for a simplex QSO; the contact in the log must be direct (POTA rules · Activator guide).
First-day VHF habit (Technician-friendly):
- Start on 146.52 MHz FM simplex — national 2 m calling. Another good option is 146.58 MHz (NAAF). Conservative field tips: K0NR — VHF for Parks On The Air?.
- Call CQ POTA. Leave gaps. ID per Part 97.
- Aim for 10 different stations on that first day so you are not leaning on band/mode doubles yet. Official rules allow counting the same station again on a different band/mode pair; keep day one simple.
- Spot yourself on pota.app when you have data — VHF hunters will not find you by accident. No cell: ask the first hunter to spot you, or use the Dead cell recipes.
Stock rubber-duck is fine for very local work; a better whip helps. Population nearby helps. None of that changes the 10-QSO / no-land-repeater gates.
5. Close-out via Doctor
- Export ADIF from your logger (Polo on the phone is fine).
- Run ADIF Doctor — fix parks, grids, 2-fers, emit the POTA pack.
- Upload the POTA-oriented file on pota.app (My Log Uploads), not a random “Full” dump meant for Recap.
- Optional: Recap for the shareable card after Doctor.
Ordered closeout: Leave-the-park closeout. Full activate chapter: Activate. License path and first net: Get licensed · Start hub.
